Review
Without a doubt, The Safe Cig is the most noteworthy electronic cigarette manufacturer/retailer currently operating in the U.S. Their efforts in the research and development of electronic cigarettes are second to none and have resulted in a state-of-the-art, micro-circuit-board-controlled, cigarette-style battery that outperforms its competitors in nearly every measure. Further, their cartridge/atomizers incorporate proprietary advances that provide unmatched longevity and superior vapor production. Taste however, is another matter entirely.
The Safe Cig Starter Kit includes one five-pack of cartridge/atomizers in your choice of three flavors (Traditional, Classic Tobacco, and Menthol), and six levels of Nicotine (0mg, 6mg, 11mg, 14mg, 18mg, and 24mg). As we prefer the taste of traditional tobacco cigarettes like Marlboro, Parliament, Winston, and True; we could not decide between the Traditional and Classic Tobacco flavors. We decided to order both by including Traditional (24mg) with the starter kit and added a refill pack of the Classic Tobacco (24mg) to the order. We were glad we did.
The Safe Cig is available in your choice of three flavors (Traditional, Classic Tobacco, and Menthol), and six levels of Nicotine (0mg, 6mg, 11mg, 14mg, 18mg, and 24mg).
In addition to the five cartridge atomizers, The Safe Cig Starter Kit includes one cigarette-style battery, one USB charger, and one AC wall adapter for $69.95. The additional refill cartridge five-pack added an additional $12.50 to our cost. However, shipping is free, and The Safe Cig starter kits are backed by a 30-day money back guarantee as well as a limited lifetime warranty.
Our testing of the product began with a Traditional flavor cartridge/atomizer. Described on the website as a "big, bold taste to provide excellent satisfaction," we could not honestly describe the flavor in terms quite as complimentary. While it produced excellent amounts of vapor, we found the taste to be harsh, and similar to some of the lower-rated brand flavors. Further, the cartridge/atomizer produced slight popping and crackling sounds. The Safe Cig Traditional flavor turned out to be disappointing.
Next we screwed on a Classic Tobacco cartridge/atomizer and took a long, slow drag. Once again we were treated to voluminous vapor plumes and the same slight crackling and popping sounds experienced with the Traditional flavor cartridge/atomizer. Described on the website as "smoother and lighter flavor than Traditional but still gives perfect exhilaration for your taste buds," the Classic Tobacco was a major improvement over the Traditional flavor. More akin to the flavor of real tobacco cigarettes, we judged the taste to be both pleasant and satisfying.
Additionally, we found The Safe Cig website to be the best we have reviewed to date. The volume of detailed product information available is unparalleled and sheds much-needed light on current R&D, manufacturing and import practices in this nascent industry. Their Certificates and Transparency page is an important first in an industry that would be well served by establishing their own standards, before the FDA imposes what would likely be onerous regulations, if not an outright ban. And while we certainly applaud The Safe Cig's ongoing efforts to advance the technology, we found their e-cigarettes to be our fifth choice for the reasons contained herein. It is our hope that they will continue to improve and help to set the standards by which all electronic cigarettes will be judged.
We estimated that including our The Safe Cig Starter Kit purchase, the cost to maintain a one-pack-per-day cigarette habit using The Safe Cig was $589.95 annually or $49.16 per month or $11.35 per week or only $1.61 per day. Evaluated strictly in terms of long-term costs, we found The Safe Cig to be an excellent value. When compared to the cost of tobacco cigarettes and the same one-pack-per-day habit at $6.00 per pack or $2190.00 per year or $182.50 per month or $42.12 per week or $6.00 per day, the annual savings for a The Safe Cig user is $1600.05, in addition to the health benefits provided by switching to an e-cigarette.
